CHAPTER ELEVEN

THEY WOKE THE next morning to the sound of his phone chirping. He groaned, rolled away from Autumn and answered with a groggy, “Hello?”

“Hey, Jack!”

“Sebastian, why aren’t you on a honeymoon?”

“We leave Wednesday, remember?”

He ran his hand down his face. He’d had about thirty seconds of sleep. He was lucky he could remember his last name. “Sure.”

“We’re sitting here wondering where you are. You’re supposed to come to the townhouse for the after-wedding brunch.”

He sat up. Another brunch. At the townhouse. It had all been in Ivy’s last memo to the bridal party. “I forgot.”

“Don’t worry. Looks like Autumn forgot too.”

He nudged her with his foot, his eyes widening as he pointed at his phone to let her know they were in trouble or at the very least about to get caught spending the night together.

“Anyway, Ivy’s going to call her now. We’ll keep the blintzes warm for you.”

With that he disconnected the call.

Jack had only time enough to say, “Ivy’s about to call you,” before her cell phone rang.

She sat up, her pale skin glowing in the morning sun that poured in through the wall of window facing east. “Hey, Ivy,” she said, catching Jack’s gaze. “Oh, darn. I slept in.” She bit her lower lip and shook her head, as if embarrassed by the lie. But she had a look of devilment in her eyes.

“I’ll get there as soon as I can.”

She hung up the phone and looked at Jack. “How the heck am I going to get to a brunch when the only clothes I have are a bridesmaid’s dress and heels that are way too high.”

He leaned in and kissed her. A discussion about dresses and shoes was not the appropriate way to greet the woman who had rendered him speechless the night before. Holding her gaze, he pulled away and said, “Good morning.”

She smiled. “Good morning. I don’t suppose you have a size eight dress and seven and a half shoes in your closet?”

“No. But I have a neighbor about your size who might be willing to lend you a something.”

“I’ll take it.”

He hit a speed dial number on his phone to ask Regina if she had anything Autumn could borrow. Then he called Arnie and asked to have the limo outside in fifteen minutes.

When he was done with his calls, she bounced out of bed and they headed for the shower. Luckily, they knew Arnie was on his way with the limo and Regina would soon drop by with a dress and shoes or the sight of her all soapy would have delayed their trip to Ivy and Sebastian’s even more.

She got out first, towel dried and slipped into one of his robes as the elevator bell rang.

He leaned out of the all-glass shower. “That’s probably Regina. I gave her today’s code. She’ll be standing in the entry when you get out there.”

She saluted and ran off. He finished his shower and when he walked into the bedroom, she stood by the bed, wearing an ivory sweater dress and black high heels.
