Marcellus, Wothar, and Valerius stood in the darkness. The three men wore their cloaks to ward off the chill. They had little sleep that night. Dawn would come soon, and then the general’s plan would be unleashed. It was a bold gamble and more than a bit risky—in fact, it was extremely risky—but Germanicus would not hear of any dissension. The castrum was shaped like a rectangle. The tactical plan was to allow the Germans to scale the western wall, one of the smaller sides of the oblong shape of the encampment, and then funnel them to the center of the compound. Hopefully the attackers would include Arminius and his senior deputies. Once the Germans gained access, the breach on the wall would be sealed by a reinforced legion. The cavalry plus a full legion, the Twentieth, would then sally forth and slay the entrapped Germans. But that was not the end of the plan. Once the German forces inside were slaughtered, the legions would rush out of the gates and attack the enemy assaulting the fortress.
