Chapter Thirty-Two

Murles, France

As they watched from their perch a half of a mile away, Jason Abude and Ryan Mullins scanned the Languedoc Granulats quarry through long-range binoculars. They needed to determine whether or not this site was live.

“Two guards appear to be stationed back from the main gate,” Mullins observed in a whisper. “They’re standing just to the left of the shack beside the road at the drainage pond. It looks as though they have Kalashnikovs slung over their shoulders. I would guess they’re AK-47s.”

“Got ‘em . . . and I think you’re right,” responded Abude. “That’s a lot of firepower if they know how to use it. And there is another tango at the western back entrance. He appears to be armed the same.”

“I can’t see anyone else mulling around,” said Mullins. “Wait one. There’s another bogey at the weight scale building, and where’s there’s one, there may be more. Do you see anyone else?”

“No, I don’t. I wonder where everybody is?”

Suddenly, a massive explosion rocked the quarry. It was powerful and sent what appeared to be an enormous amount of dust and ash high into the air.

“That looks promising,” Mullins observed.

“How so? It looked like just a big explosion to me and, boy was it loud!”

“Did you hear a warning siren before the explosion?”

“No, but they are blowing up stone. It’s what they do in a quarry.” Abude responded.

“Yes, they blow things up, but they should be doing them in the right way. Every quarry, just like any detonation sequence anywhere, is proceeded by a warning siren to ensure everyone is a safe distance from the blast. These guys did not, which means they are not following protocol. Why? Because they don’t care. They are testing the magnitude of what they built . . . and they only worry about themselves. Secondly, the amount of dust released was massive and uncontrolled. Normally, quarries lay a blast mat on explosions to retard the release of projectile matter to contain the blast damage. That cloud, and the way it erupted, sure didn’t look like it had a blast mat on it. I think we’ve found the right spot.”

Abude tried to refocus his binoculars. “With all of that dust and smoke down there, I can’t see anything. Hopefully, the breeze will clear things out.”

After a couple of minutes, Mullins observed, “Well, looky here. Here comes a bunch of folks in those two pickup trucks. It looks as though they were safely offsite watching the explosion. I count an additional seven bogies.”

Abude asked, “Now what?”

Mullins started stowing his equipment and said, “Now, we make a reconnaissance visit to the quarry. We need to know what we face.”

Abude nodded his head in agreement and asked, “How do you want to get there? That road to the East or the one that enters from the Southwest?”

Mullins shook his head and said, “Neither. We’ll go in over the terrain. I don’t want them to have a clue they are being watched.” Pointing to a large
