CHAPTER THIRTY

Nate

Nate arrived at the security post, where a small group of volunteers and ex-military personnel were already assembled, discussing the day’s duties in low, serious tones. The perimeter patrols were being organized, each member assigned specific sections of the fence to monitor, while others checked their radios and equipment, ensuring everything was in working order.

As Nate joined them, receiving a nod of acknowledgment from the team leader, a sense of purpose solidified within him. He needed to speak to George before any more time passed—the fragile peace of the camp was worth protecting in a world turned upside down, and those men he overheard could be making their move soon.

Nate shifted nervously, his foot tapping a rapid rhythm on the ground as he waited for the team leader to finish briefing two young men. She was a sturdy woman with a stern expression, and as she finished with the young men, he cleared his throat to get her attention.

“I won’t be able to join the patrol straight away,” he said. “I need to speak with George McGuire. It’s urgent, but it won’t take long.”

The team leader eyed him skeptically, her annoyance obvious. “Everyone wants a piece of George’s time,” she replied curtly. “If it’s that important, bring it up at the council meeting tonight.”

Nate’s anxiety spiked. Waiting until evening could be too late. “It can’t wait,” he insisted. “It’s about the security of the camp.” He hesitated—he shouldn’t divulge too much without knowing who to trust.

The team leader’s expression softened slightly, but she shook her head. “Look, Nate, I understand you’re concerned about something, but I have orders to follow. If you go off now, it’s my neck on the line. Just let me know what’s going on, and I’ll report it to George. Following the proper channels is important.”

Nate’s brow furrowed. He needed to convince her without revealing too much. “I wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t serious. Just a few minutes with George, that’s all I need. It’s not something he’d appreciate being passed on to anyone else. Please. I just need you to trust me.”

There was a pause as the team leader considered his request, her gaze assessing him. Finally, she let out a sigh. “Fine. But make it quick. George is over by the supply depot, doing an inventory check. And Nate,” she added, her tone stern, “if you’re not back in ten minutes, I’ll have to report it. We can’t have people shirking their duties.”

Nate nodded, relief washing over him. “Thank you,” he said, already turning to head in the direction of the supply depot.

As he jogged away, passing men who could very well be one of the two he’d just overheard, the weight of responsibility bore down on him. He had to warn George and ensure the camp’s safety, and he had to do it carefully. If the men knew he’d been eavesdropping, he could put both Rosa and himself in the crosshairs. Plus, if he tipped them off, it could force their hand or worse.
