Chapter Four
âHow did you know itâs me?â
He shook his head. âI didnât at first.â
I felt shame coloring my cheeks. âWhen did you figure it out?â
He looked up and down the street. Now I realized he did this a lot. Was it a cop habit? As if he was checking for trouble? His jaw seemed to tighten. I realized he was very angry.
âWhen you made me the perfect cappuccino.â
I stared at him. âExcuse me?â
His chin jutted toward me. âThat was the other giveaway. Your unfailing politeness. Your brother, in a million years, wouldnât remember how I like my coffee. He also would never have thought twice about a Band-Aid. You appreciate the details, Zeca. Do you know how good that makes a man feel?â
âIâerââ
âAlex would never have invited the Swedes to dinner the way you did.â He gave a slight grin and shook his head. âNothing about you made sense on our date, but everything about you felt right.â
I gulped. âFeltâ¦right?â
âZeca, I suspected the switch but didnât think that two normal, grown men would engage in that kind of crap. I realized it was you at your restaurant the morning after our date. I knew something was weird when I stood outside your house and heard your father screaming, butâ¦a few minutes alone with you at the restaurant and I knew. The energy between us was real. It was still there.â
Yes, it was. Iâd felt it too.
He sighed. âThen that night. You were the unhappiest waiter in all of Italy.â
âYou tortured me by kissing Alex all night.â
Another small smile. âHis kisses are fake. Yours are not.â
âHe likes youââ
âYeah, which was why he tried to blow me off this weekend. I thought I would take great pleasure in exposing your little games, but I donât. IâI canât.â
âWhat now?â I asked. âDo you hate me?â
âHate you? No, I donât hate you.â
âIâm sorry.â
âWhy are you here?â
It was a fair question and I owed him the truth. âMy brotherâs with another guy but he also wants to keep you.â
âThatâs not what I asked. I want to know why you are here.â
âBecause youâre the most amazing man Iâve ever met.â
He shook his head. âThis is so fucked up.â
âI know. Iâm so sorry.â I hung my head. It was all over now. Maybe it was for the best.
Neither of us said anything for a moment and he seemed a little less angry now.
âWell, I donât know what else to say.â I felt helpless and miserable. âI care for you too much to go through with the charade. I wanted the chance to be with you and it was selfish. Iâm sorry. Maybeâ¦maybe one day you could find it in your heart to forgive me and give me, Zeca, a chance to know you.â
He didnât say anything. I reached for my bag, still in his grip.
He pulled his hand back. âJust like that, youâre going to run off?â
âIââ
âJesus, Zeca. I couldnât wait to be with you! I changed our plans so we could leave earlier.â
âI thought you had a meeting?â
âYes, I do.
