Chapter Four

“How did you know it’s me?”

He shook his head. “I didn’t at first.”

I felt shame coloring my cheeks. “When did you figure it out?”

He looked up and down the street. Now I realized he did this a lot. Was it a cop habit? As if he was checking for trouble? His jaw seemed to tighten. I realized he was very angry.

“When you made me the perfect cappuccino.”

I stared at him. “Excuse me?”

His chin jutted toward me. “That was the other giveaway. Your unfailing politeness. Your brother, in a million years, wouldn’t remember how I like my coffee. He also would never have thought twice about a Band-Aid. You appreciate the details, Zeca. Do you know how good that makes a man feel?”

“I—er—”

“Alex would never have invited the Swedes to dinner the way you did.” He gave a slight grin and shook his head. “Nothing about you made sense on our date, but everything about you felt right.”

I gulped. “Felt…right?”

“Zeca, I suspected the switch but didn’t think that two normal, grown men would engage in that kind of crap. I realized it was you at your restaurant the morning after our date. I knew something was weird when I stood outside your house and heard your father screaming, but…a few minutes alone with you at the restaurant and I knew. The energy between us was real. It was still there.”

Yes, it was. I’d felt it too.

He sighed. “Then that night. You were the unhappiest waiter in all of Italy.”

“You tortured me by kissing Alex all night.”

Another small smile. “His kisses are fake. Yours are not.”

“He likes you—”

“Yeah, which was why he tried to blow me off this weekend. I thought I would take great pleasure in exposing your little games, but I don’t. I—I can’t.”

“What now?” I asked. “Do you hate me?”

“Hate you? No, I don’t hate you.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Why are you here?”

It was a fair question and I owed him the truth. “My brother’s with another guy but he also wants to keep you.”

“That’s not what I asked. I want to know why you are here.”

“Because you’re the most amazing man I’ve ever met.”

He shook his head. “This is so fucked up.”

“I know. I’m so sorry.” I hung my head. It was all over now. Maybe it was for the best.

Neither of us said anything for a moment and he seemed a little less angry now.

“Well, I don’t know what else to say.” I felt helpless and miserable. “I care for you too much to go through with the charade. I wanted the chance to be with you and it was selfish. I’m sorry. Maybe…maybe one day you could find it in your heart to forgive me and give me, Zeca, a chance to know you.”

He didn’t say anything. I reached for my bag, still in his grip.

He pulled his hand back. “Just like that, you’re going to run off?”

“I—”

“Jesus, Zeca. I couldn’t wait to be with you! I changed our plans so we could leave earlier.”

“I thought you had a meeting?”

“Yes, I do.
