DANTE

I’ve waited five months and four days for this day. This is how long we’ve been engaged, and never in that time did I move to kiss Elena. I didn’t trust myself to stop at just one, because I know that when I do finally kiss her, the need for more will consume me. If it were up to me, we’d be walking into the church, getting married, and forgetting the fucking reception. I’d carry her out over my shoulder and directly to my bed, where I can spend the rest of the day and night exploring every single inch of her body.

Seeing her in jeans and a T-shirt, dresses, shorts, and, worst of all, her workout leggings and tanks that mold to her ass and breasts was complete torture. It’s like having your favorite dessert right there, while you salivate in anticipation of the first bite, and not having a fork to eat it with.

Reno, Sebastian, and Reno join me while I get ready this morning. Months ago, Reno offered to tear this place down and put up a new house for Elena and me as a wedding gift. Elena called this place perfect, so I declined, but that didn’t stop my big brother from putting a hefty deposit into my bank account as his gift to us. It’s not that I need the money, but as always, Reno believes in being fair, and he did the same for Sebastian when he married Olivia.

“Before we commence with the celebration, we should discuss the issues at hand. I think we all need to be on the same page as the day rolls out and we’re all caught up,” Sebastian says.

“What have you got?” Reno asks as he ties his tie. Reno is meticulous with his grooming. Never is a hair out of place when he makes an appearance. You’d never imagine this man to be a cruel vindicator when challenged.

“Lixin Li is still underground, nowhere to be found. It’s like the man disappeared through the same hole he crawled out of,” Sebastian says.

“That’s not what I want to hear,” Reno responds.

“I’ve kept close tabs on Fidele Del Piero. You’re right, he’s dirty. Filthy, in fact. After Renata divulged everything to her father, Fidele’s name came up a lot. He’s been spewing shit, trying to rile up the men under Corrado. Fidele’s been skimming funds right out from under his underboss’s nose.” Sebastian pauses. “We have two problems. The first is we have a thief and traitor among us. The second is our devoted underboss, Corrado Minnuci. He’s no longer fit to serve in a leadership role.”

“Explain,” Reno commands, looking from Sebastian and Leo, then settling his eyes on me.

“Corrado has dementia. He’s kept it quiet, and for a long time, it wasn’t affecting his work. Unfortunately, the disease has progressed and is now a problem. He’s been waiting for his son to finish his education and be ready to take over as his successor. Corrado entrusted the wrong man to help him through his transition.
