CHAPTER 32
IT WAS ABOUT NOON WHEN HARLOW LIFTED HER HEAD OFF THE CAR door and opened her eyes. Though she hadnât planned to, she had fallen asleep even before they had left Los Angeles. After awaking, she almost absentmindedly glanced around at the rural countryside that was passing her by at sixty-five miles an hour before leaning over to Boyer and asking, âWhere are we going?â
âArkansas,â came the simple and direct response. âItâs about the only place I figure where we can stay and be safe.â
âAre we driving this car all the way there?â she inquired.
âOh yeah,â the reporter answered, reaching out and patting the old Lincolnâs flat dash. âThe V12 is purring like a kitten, the Columbia two-speed overdrive is working like a champ, and it should make it with no problem at all. Besides, no oneâll be looking for us in this classic. Theyâll just think weâre going to a car show.â
âWhat about Dr. Feller?â
âI called her while you slept. Caught her up on the situation and told her to head to Arkansas as well. Jimâs supposed to be in DC. I told Jeannette to have him call us when he got the chance. He does know weâre heading to the cabin.â
âBy the way,â Harlow cut in as they passed a Wendyâs. âCan we stop and pick up something? Iâm really hungry. Escaping explosions always does that to me.â
âNo problem. As a matter of fact, we probably should buy a change of clothes and other needed items. I know we both have stuff back at the cabin, but itâs going to be a long drive, and we appear to need a bit of freshening up. A nap wouldnât hurt either.â
After a couple of burgers and a stop at a Walmart, the duo checked into a Holiday Inn Express. A shower, some new clothes, a four-hour nap, and a brief walk restored their energy. It was just after sundown when Boyer switched on the TV to CNN. As Harlow sat down on the bed, an attractive Asian American woman was catching her viewers up on the dayâs top stories.
âIn Hollywood, a mysterious explosion leveled the historic Gould mansion. Valued at more than five million, not counting a priceless art collection that adorned its walls, the home had once been a regular on the social circuit during Hollywoodâs Golden Age. Now, as these pictures show, itâs little more than rubble. Early reports blame the explosion and fire on a gas buildup caused by a ruptured line. It appears the only victim of the tragedy was Dr. Johnathon Gould.
âIn Washington, the vice president and his wife attended a charity event for the American Cancer Society. Surrounded by a host of top party fund-raisers, the VP only smiled when asked if he planned on running for office next year. Washington insiders say itâs a sure bet the popular politician will be the front-runner for the top spot on the ticket.
âMeanwhile, in overseas news, Germany and France have begun to expel many of the Middle Eastern immigrants that have flooded the nations during the past two decades.
