Chapter

Eight

NANCY FLUNG OPEN the door of the booth and raced up the stairs. She had to find Jordan and learn what was going on. She peeked through the theater doors, but the house was as empty as the lobby. Nancy turned and went outside.

Her gaze took in the sidewalk in both directions. Jordan was obviously moving quickly; he was nowhere in sight. Nancy wondered for a second where he had gone. Then she remembered that Bess was at Rick’s, waiting for her. She had to get there soon, or Bess would be worried.

Rick waved to Nancy when she entered the café. By now, the owner knew her. She waved back, then located Bess in the rear of the restaurant. Jordan was standing over her, smiling.

Nancy’s insides lurched. She couldn’t let Jordan harm her friend.

The place was bustling as usual, and Nancy had to work her way through the crowd milling around the coffee bar.

“Hi, Bess. Jordan,” she said cordially, looking from leading man to leading lady and back again.

“You all right, Nan?” Bess said, studying Nancy’s face. “You look funny.”

“Everything’s fine,” Nancy tried to reassure her.

Jordan smiled at Bess, and took her hand in his. “I just came in myself,” he said, “and Bess was kind enough to invite me to join you two for a bite. Otherwise, I’d have to wait my turn like everyone else.”

“Fat chance,” Bess said, laughing. “You know you would have gotten a table no matter what. You’re a VIP, Jordan.”

“You will be, too, Bess, after tonight,” he told her.

“Excuse me, Jordan,” Nancy broke in before Jordan could sit down. “Could you possibly give me a hand? I’m having a problem with my car—one of my tires looks flat and I’d rather deal with it now instead of later, after dark.”

Bess gave Nancy a surprised look.

“Sure, Nancy.” Jordan shrugged. “Will you excuse us for a minute, Bess? Come on, Nancy, we can go out through the back door.”

“I’ll meet you back here in a few minutes,” Bess told them. “I’m headed for the restroom anyway.” She headed for the ladies’ room, casting a curious backward glance at Nancy. She didn’t ask what was going on, but she clearly knew something was up.

“Can I be straight with you?” Nancy asked Jordan once they were outside.

“Of course,” Jordan said, looking confused.

“I overheard you on the phone a few minutes ago.” When Jordan gave her a blank look, Nancy added, “Something about how ‘if she has to be killed, I’ll go along with it. . . . ’ Does that sound familiar?”

Jordan’s eyes widened. “Oh, that!” he said. “Who did you think I was out to get?”

“A friend of mine,” Nancy said flatly.

Suddenly, Jordan laughed out loud. “Nancy, you couldn’t have thought I was plotting to kill Bess!”

“The thought did cross my mind,” Nancy admitted, folding her arms to await his explanation.

“I was talking with my agent—who also happens to be Kate’s agent.” The smile left Jordan’s face suddenly. “He was telling me they’re killing off Kate’s character on the soap.
