Lisbon was just as Honor remembered it, surrounded by vineyards and orange groves, full of dogs and priests, and white houses with terracotta roofs. She remembered the steep, dirty streets, most of them too narrow to accommodate a carriage, the iron balconies and the decorative blue tiles on the walls of the houses.

The city was crowded with officers and men from the Allied army. Further downstream at the little town of Belem there were even more men; those who could not fight, and those who would not fight—the so-called Belem Rangers.

‘It’s strange to be back here,’ Honor said, finding comfort in reminiscence. ‘When we first arrived, I couldn’t believe how many priests there were—and all the garlic and oil in the cooking! Now I think I’ll miss that when I get back to England.’

‘And the heat and the dust and the mud and the cold,’ said Raven, but he was smiling too.

‘I wouldn’t have missed these four years,’ said Honor sincerely. ‘We’ll win now, won’t we?’ she continued, wanting his professional opinion. ‘I know we had to scuttle back to the Portuguese border last year, but we’ve made so many lasting advances. The French are out of Portugal now for good.’

‘Yes, they are,’ Cole agreed. ‘I think the next push will drive the French back to their own border—out of Spain. Dammit!’ His fists clenched abruptly, but then he forced his hands to relax. ‘We’d better find some lodgings,’ he said curtly.
