Over the next few days, Haleema kept her head down, continuing her chores while keeping her eyes open. She knew she needed to heal and be fully fit again before making any escape attempts. There was no way she was going to rot in this place. She just had to get out as soon as possible.

The crossroads on the north end of town was the main route out, but that was evidently blocked day and night. From what Kimiya had shown her on the map, there were other main roads out of the city. As far as she knew, the ones to avoid were any to the south and east. The Daesh were overrunning the entire southern region of the country, and yet the government’s official news channels had blatantly played down their victories.

She wondered how far they were from her hometown now. The situation was confusing. Now she was worried about her mother. Was she safe?

How dare her brothers leave her—to join them!

After another full day of continuous chores, Haleema was outside in the yard and saw a convoy of around five pickup trucks filled with Daesh fighters drive past.

She turned to Kimiya, who was taking clothes off the line.

“What is happening?”

“They go off to ambush or fight somewhere. It happens every once in a while.”

“So, there will be less of them in the town.”

Kimiya shrugged.

“It’s hard to know. Usually, they are gone for a few days.”

An opportunity had presented itself, and Haleema was determined to take advantage.

“I think I’m going to try and get out of here tonight. You should come with me.”

Kimiya was folding the clothes into a pile and looked at Haleema nervously.

“I don’t know…”

“You want to stay here? It could be more dangerous in the long run. Don’t you want to see your family again?”

“Yes…” Kimiya looked sad for a moment, as if she was thinking about an impossible dream.

“… but I don’t know where they are.”

“Is there anyone you can go to? If we can get out of the town?”

“Yes,” she said. “There is someone.”

She looked at Haleema with renewed hope.

“So, what is your plan?” Kimiya’s eyes were bright with anticipation.
