As Sophie knelt beside Natalie, a gentle smile graced her lips as she handed her the unpainted dinosaur. Jack watched as Sophie taught Natalie how to mix colors for unique shades, praising each brush stroke no matter how wobbly or bold.

"What do you think, Natalie?" she asked.

"I love it. Do you have any glitter? I think my dinosaur would look really good all sparkly."

"Hmm. Let me see what I can find." Sophie slipped into the back room for a moment and came out with a jar of gold glitter. "Look what I found!"

She handed it to Natalie, and his daughter never looked happier. Jack leaned against the doorframe, his arms crossed as he watched the scene unfold. His gaze lingered on Sophie's face, noting how her eyes shone similar to his daughter's. It was a look he remembered well. Sophie had always been vibrant, and her passion for art had been infectious.

Natalie nodded eagerly, her focus clear as she began to sprinkle the gold on the tale of the dinosaur. "Now what?"

"It has to dry. Then I'll put it in the kiln to bake."

"When can I get it?"

"Your Daddy and I are going to visit his construction site soon. When we do, I'll give him your dinosaur."

"Awesome. Do I have time to make the unicorn?"

"Sure." Sophie gathered more clay and placed it on the table for Natalie to do her thing.

"I'm not sure how to begin."

Jack figured that was another one of his daughter's ploys for attention, but he was pleased Natalie wanted to be with Sophie.

Sophie's hands were deft and patient, guiding without taking over, allowing Natalie's imagination to lead the way. A sense of satisfaction spread through him as he observed the easy rapport between them.

"You're doing great, Nat," Sophie encouraged. "Maybe add a little more here for his horn."

With careful fingers, Natalie added to her creation. The unicorn was taking shape.

Jack pushed off from the doorframe and took a step closer. He watched Sophie lean in to whisper something to Natalie that made his daughter giggle—a sound that made him smile.

"Ms. Sophie," Natalie began with a furrowed brow, "do unicorns have to be only one color?"

Sophie shook her head, her auburn hair catching light as it moved. "They can be any color you want them to be. It's your world we're creating here."

Something inside Jack shifted. It was a loosening of some long-held tension as he witnessed this moment of pure creativity and acceptance. He realized then that it wasn't just about Sophie being good with Natalie; it was about how Sophie saw the world—full of possibility and free from constraints.

As Natalie molded the tail, Jack chuckled. There was something undeniably special about watching his daughter embracing her art so freely—something he'd missed out on too often amidst the endless hours at construction sites and meetings.

Sophie caught Jack's eye and offered him a smile that seemed to say she understood exactly what he was thinking. In that smile, there was no past hurt or awkwardness—just an unspoken connection that Jack couldn’t resist.
