What Are The Odds
Let's put aside for a moment the question of what exactly the Bnei Yisroel witnessed at Har Sinai. Let's suppose that they did witness a great voice speak commandments to them, and they believed that this was the Voice of God. Which is more likely? That the Creator of the universe, in an unprecedented and unrepeated event, spoke to a group of escaped slaves in the desert? Or that their leaders found, say, a rock formation on the mountain that acted as a natural megaphone and used the effect to trick the people?
The same question works just as well when we dream up an outlandish explanation for what the Bnei Yisroel witnessed. Which is more likely, that someone today secretly discovered time travel, took modern equipment back in time, and put on a show for the Bnei Yisroel at the mountain using microphones and fireworks, or that the Creator of the universe, in an unprecedented and unrepeated event, personally gave the Torah at Har Sinai? Even here, as unlikely as time travel is, the odds are with the time traveler.
Compounding the problem of the possibility that Matan Torah was a trick, a show, or a ritual is that we don't have any independent evidence or accounts of the story that we could use to determine if the people correctly interpreted what they experienced. We don't know where Har Sinai is, and aren't certain what, if anything, the people heard from God. Without even these basic details, let alone independent accounts of individual people's impressions of the event, we have no way to reconstruct what happened. We're left with the distinct possibility that Matan Torah was a misapprehension, a ritual, or an outright fraud, and not a Divine revelation at all.
