Chapter 17: Neil

I’m beginning to think that “chill” isn’t the best word to describe Jules. Maybe he’s chill when we’re hanging around his apartment or taking a walk. But I’ve seen a growing number of highly un-chill moments that have forced me to reassess. Chill is certainly one piece of the puzzle, but there’s also passion, protectiveness, and affection.

I like all of it, so very much, but I wouldn’t want to be the person who threatens what he cares about. I’m what he cares about, aren’t I? It sure seems that way. The question is: Do I have the courage to ask him? To see if he wants something more with me? Something lasting? I almost asked earlier, but then the car stopped, and the moment passed. It’s too noisy and crowded to try again tonight. That’s what I’m telling myself. It’s totally NOT that I’m too scared to ask. I sigh. I am totally scared.

Why disrupt what’s already working? There’s no reason, except I want more. I’ve always wanted more with him. A label. A commitment. And I know in my bones that losing him would hurt like hell. That I’d feel the absence of him, even though he has no contact with my everyday life. My heart would know. Jules picks that moment to look back at me and his face immediately darkens.

“You sure you’re okay?” he asks.

“Yes. Really. I was just thinking about work,” I reassure him. Good lord, what was my face doing a moment ago? “Let’s go see your friend.”

“Right on,” he says and continues leading me to the door that leads to the control room.

His movements are too jerky to be considered chill. Like he’s still mentally shaking off that confrontation. Nothing like the easy stride he uses when we’re at home together. Did I just call his place home? Before I can unpack that little truth grenade, we’ve arrived at the control room, and I have to mentally realign. Jules leans over and points to my earplugs. I quickly stuff them in my pocket.

“Don’t worry,” Jules says. “He’s going to love you.”

“Cool, sure.” My voice sounds brittle but there’s nothing I can do now.

Jules slowly opens the door like he doesn’t want to startle anyone.

“Hey Kris,” Jules calls towards the leather-clad man facing at the far side of the room standing behind a control panel. Next to him a technician with earphones is fiddling with the controls.

Kris turns he looks at me and his eyes narrow. Whoa Kris is hot. He’s big with dirty blond hair, tattoos, not as many muscles as Jules, but that same kind of rough-around-the edges look, except with lots of swagger. I kind of want to punch him and I’m not sure if it’s because he’s so handsome and smug or because he’s looking at me like I’m gum on his shoe.

“Hey Jules, come on in,” Kris smiles at his friend, “and you must be Neil.” He shoots me a cold glance.

I’m starting to wonder what Jules said about me.
