Chapter Eighteen – Egress

Golden Gate Park, 1:45 PM

I paused on the foot bridge over Stow Lake and did a full scan. I saw nothing hostile. I’d done what I could to spot ticks, but the terrain and having only one good egress route – again – prevented my running aggressive CSRs.

I had other options. I exited the park, found a good location, pulled out my secure phone and called Black.

“I’m clear of the park.”

“Roger that. Any problems?”

“I’m not sure. What do the Watchers say?”

“Six tangos. The sniper had a spotter. Two others were on the island. Two more were watching the bridges from outside. The one on your end is wearing jeans, a T-shirt with a marijuana leaf, normal height and weight, black hair, wearing sunglasses.”

“No one followed me across. No joy on the pot shirt.”

Black said, “They probably won’t follow on foot. They spotted your vehicle and put a GPS tracker on it.”

“Cute. You are sure?”

“Double confirmation. Millie’s people plus Josie.”

“Do the tangos have eyes on my vehicle now?”

“No. Two teams are now sitting in cars, two to a vehicle, a white Prius with California plates and a blue Kia. Low performance vehicles, but politically correct and common.”

“Where?”

“Both are on your side of the park, but neither is close. They seem to be waiting for you to move. They can pick you up if you head out on the 80 or on 101. The 101 is egress route B1 in your GPS, the 80 is egress route C.”

“What about the other two tangos?”

“The sniper and his buddy. They took the other route out. They are sitting in a red Corvette with the top down, watching the other foot bridge. That’s where your Red Sparrow was headed.”

“They do NOT want her followed. It’s a good thing we’re not.”

“Roger that.”

“The two tango teams on my side can cover our egress routes B1 and C. The team on the other side has a better shot at the 101. It can clear her, and then get to position and pick me up as I head over the Golden Gate Bridge on the 101. The only routes out of here to the North are over those two Bridges.”

“They have them covered. Do you want to egress to the South? You can go down the 101 or 280. The tangos would all be out of position to cover those.”

“Negative. Let’s stick with the tangos we know.”

“Roger that.”

“Can you get the rest of the team on this net?”

“I can.”

“Do it.” I waited for the others to check in and the green light to come on.

Black said, “Scooter One is Vinnie and Pat. Scooter Two is Rudy and Terry.”

“Got it. Raven to Scooters. Confirm we are Option B on the Rules of Engagement.”

“Scooter One confirms option B.”

“Scooter Two confirms option B”

“Black, you remind them what that means.”

“We use force, but try not to go full lethal. Stop them, but try hard not to kill them.

“Good summary. Scooters, these tangos might not want to back off. Killing them would compromise our mission, but we cannot and must not lead them to me or Josie.
