Suspected Russian Mob Stronghold, West 6th Street New York City, New York

Dawson cursed. Everything had been going perfectly. They had accessed the rooftop without incident. Red’s team was stationed outside operating a drone with a view of the roof, and had radioed in the all-clear. Atlas had hurled a rope with a grappling hook, the prongs gripping on the first try. Niner had slid across first, followed by Atlas then their gear. Dawson had come across last, and that was when their carefully laid plans went awry.

The rooftop door on their target building opened, four men stepping out, laughing boisterously, one already with a joint between his lips, a lighter sparking in the dark.

They had no time to waste. They couldn’t simply hide and wait out these men. Maggie was being assaulted, and every moment prolonged her suffering. He rose from his position behind a large HVAC system, his suppressed Glock belching lead. Two dropped before the others even reacted. Atlas took out the third, but the fourth fell back through the doorway, and a moment later he shouted a warning in Russian followed by the rattle of an Uzi, its muzzle flashes framed by the darkened stairwell.

The hostile was firing blindly, and Dawson indicated for Niner and Atlas to advance. The two men rushed forward, careful to stay out of the line of fire, both reaching the wall framing the door. The gunfire stopped momentarily as the Russian reloaded, and Atlas stepped in front of the door, his MP5 at the ready, and squeezed out two bursts.

“Clear!” he announced.

Dawson pointed at the gear. “Start rigging everything. Our element of surprise is blown.”

Mickey and Jagger quickly went to work as Atlas and Niner held their positions at the door. Niner cursed. “Hey, BD, it sounds like they’re going apeshit down there. What do you want us to do?”

“Rig the door. After the first few get toasted, the rest might think twice.”

“Roger that.”

Atlas covered Niner as he wired the door with a little surprise.

Dawson activated his comms, shaking his head at Kane’s callsign. “Chunky-Monkey, Zero-One. Status report.”

Kane immediately replied. “I think I outdid myself on that callsign. They’re going apeshit for sure. We’re picking up dozens of voices.”

“Is Maggie still in the target room?”

“As far as we can tell, yes, but Sherrie just heard someone say, ‘Get the girl.’”

Dawson cursed as he strode toward the ropes Mickey and Jagger were working on. Jagger read his intent and pointed at one of them.

“That one’s ready.”

Dawson grabbed it and clipped himself on then dropped over the edge, rapidly descending toward the seventh floor, mentally counting the windows.

Red’s voice chirped in his ear. “Zero-One, Zero-Two. Two more floors. Over.”

Dawson slowed his descent, coming to a halt just above the seventh floor. He twisted 90 degrees so he was parallel to the window frame, then tore open the Velcro of one of his many pockets. He fished out a small charge then reached down and placed it on the glass as the rest of the team sprinted down the side of the building, tightening their brakes as they neared him.
