Jack had almost given up hope. Every time he thought he saw Crean coming back with help, it turned out to be a group of emperor penguins. It was strange how much they looked like men from a distance.

But finally, Jack heard a bark. When he looked up, he saw not only Ranger but Crean and Scott and Oates — who were definitely not penguins. They were saved!

“Use the sled as a ladder and climb up onto the barrier!” Captain Scott shouted.

“What about the supplies?” Bowers called.

“I don’t care a bit about the ponies and the sleds!” the captain hollered down. “It’s you I want, and I am going to see you safe up here on the barrier before I do anything else.”

And so they climbed up. Jack was thankful to be standing on ice that wasn’t lurching and heaving beneath him.

“My dear chaps,” Captain Scott said after the last man reached the top. “You can’t think how glad I am to see you safe.”

Jack thought he could guess. He was pretty glad to see the captain, too. He was even happier to see his dog. He wasn’t the dog’s real owner, of course. But he’d come to think of the shaggy golden hound as his. He hoped the dog felt the same way.

Captain Scott let them try to recover some of their supplies. In the end, they saved everything except two ponies that fell into the sea. It was sad, and Jack couldn’t help thinking of his own horse, Whetu. But he knew the day could have ended so much worse.

That night, they camped far from the edge of the open water. Still, Jack checked outside every so often to make sure the ice wasn’t breaking up.

When Jack finally settled to sleep, Ranger lay awake in the stuffy tent. He’d worked hard again today. He’d jumped across all those rivers in the ice. He’d gone to get the captain. He’d brought help, and now everyone was safe.

When would he get to go home?
