In 1636 Roger Williams established a new colony here which he named âProvidenceâ in gratitude for âGodâs merciful providence.â It was founded on the principles of personal and religious freedom, separation of church and state, and fair and equitable treatment of all people. Providence has suffered through the King Philipâs War, economic downturns, even hurricanes, but the city has endured. Today Provi dence is the capital and largest city in Rhode Island and the third largest in New England, home to Brown University, Providence College, the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and Johnson and Wales University. In recent years, the downtown has been revitalized, and Providence is now called the âRenaissance Cityâ a name evoking a golden age in Italy. Arts and cultural happenings abound, such as Waterfire, a frequent warmer weather event where sweetâsmelling bonfires are lit atop the river at dusk, and people stroll the riverside while marveling at street performers, unusual music, and Italian gondolas that slip through the water.
P is for Providence.
Born of a vision for a perfect land where people would be free.
Is Providence real or just a dream? Youâll have to come and see!
