Chapter 57

When I went into the quilt room to check on Jan, she was holding up a green-and-white Pine Tree quilt. It was from the inventory I had purchased from Lisa.

“It’s very striking, isn’t it?” I asked.

“Yes, but the trees aren’t pointing the same direction,” she observed. “Can you tell me about this other one?”

“That one is called Ocean’s Wave. It’s an old pattern, generally done in blue and white. It’s a challenge to do, and this quilt is smaller than most bed quilts. It would be good for the wall.”

“That’s why I like it. It would be perfect.”

“Yes, it certainly would.”

“I need something to put on a little table during the show. A quilt always shows up nicely. This size would work for that as well. Do you give discounts?”

“I can do a shop owner’s discount of ten percent.”

“Great! I’ll take it. I’d like this little glass plate, too.”

I took the sale, and as she went out the door with the nice Ocean’s Wave, I wondered what abuse it might be subjected to in the hot sun and goodness knows what else! Letting my quilts go was not easy for me as a retailer. When I purchased them for myself, I didn’t have to worry. Did parents feel that way as their children grew up and left home? I wished that I could have every quilt buyer sign a letter of intent promising to take care of the quilt they purchased! I also imagined a hotline that folks could call if they saw quilt abuse. Was I being too silly? There sure were times when I would have made that call! I decided to clear my head and think of happier times when people had purchased a quilt. I knew I had sold many quilts that had landed in good homes.

I looked out the front door and stared over at Doc’s house. I went outside and decided to open the door and assess what was left. The dust was just as thick as ever and the musty odor was overwhelming. Spider webs covered many of the surfaces and there was trash strewn all around. I closed the door in disgust and locked it. Right now, if Doc wanted me to leave it alone, that was fine by me.

Two men got out of a parked car as I walked back to the shop. They quickly purchased a couple of banister poles and left. I wasn’t in the mood for small talk, so it was just as well that they did not seem to want to visit.

The phone rang. To my surprise, it was Kitty.

“I think we’ll be home in a couple of days,” she announced. “It’s a bit sooner than we’d thought, but my sweet hubby has a health issue to attend to, so it’s best that we come home.”

“Well, it’ll be nice to have you back,” I responded.

“Is your niece still at the cottage?”

“No, she went back to Wisconsin. She enjoyed it so much. Thank you again. I had Korine go over and clean the place, so I hope it’ll be like it was when you left.
