Astra
The ringing phone yanks me from my thoughts.
I glance at the clockânearly eight in the evening and the caféâs just closed.
Who in the world would be calling the café at this hour?
Apprehension coils in my gut as I reach for the phone.
âCatsandjava, this is Astra speaking. How can I help you?
Iâm met with dense silence.
Itâs so quiet, and then all of a sudden heavy breathing crackles over the line.
I must have been on mute.
âHola?â I try again in Spanish, my pulse kicking up a notch as the callerâs breathing grows heavier.
Thereâs more silence followed by low laughter that raises the hairs on my arms.
Laughter I hoped Iâd never have to hear ever again.
âHello, darling,â purrs Tonyâs familiar voice. âDid you really think you could hide from me forever?â
Fear shoots down my spine as chilling as an ice pick, but I force steadiness into my tone. âIâm not hiding. Iâm living my life, as far away as I can get from you. Weâre over, Tony. Donât ever call here again.â
His chuckle is as sinister as they come. âWeâll see about that. Iâm tired of waiting for you to come to your senses,â he pauses to moan, âGod, that pretty blue shirt youâre wearing will look even better stained red. A punishment for what youâve done.â
His threat paralyzes me.
Tony can fucking see me, which means heâs somewhere outside watching me.
Never in my wildest dreams did I think heâd leave Chicago to follow me.
Not in a million years.
Tony was always obsessive, possessive, but I never knew how volatile he was until the day he caused the scar on my head.
I knew he was calling me, how he was antagonizing me, I just never expected him to actually show up here.
God, heâs tracked me down, undoubtedly driven by years of pent-up rage.
My hands shake as I grab my cell and pull up my messages.
Thereâs only one person I can think to text right now, so I tap on Pythonâs name.
911. At café.
Tony keeps talking, taunting me about the pain heâll inflict when he gets his hands on me again.
My anxiety climbs, but I force myself to sound as strong as iron.
I spit my words out with venom, âIâm not afraid of you anymore,â
Tony laughs on the other end of the line. âYou should be afraid. Iâm not the same man you left high and dry in Chicago, dear. Iâve changed. Fuck, Iâve grown.â
Tony and I keep going back and forth.
He threatens me, says how heâs coming, and then I tell him Iâm not scared, how heâs not going to get away with this bullshit again.
I snarl at him as the door to my café swings open. âLeave me the fuck alone, Tony!â
Python rushes in on alert, scanning the entire place, obviously looking for the threat at hand.
Tony snickers on the other end, âWhoâs that? Your new boyfriend? Donât worry, I have something special planned for him too.â
His words only aggravate me even more and I snap. âYeah, it is, and heâll kick your fucking ass.
