MORTALITY DATA FROM REGISTRIES IN THE CURRENT ERA OF PH THERAPY

While the NIH registry was undoubtedly an important study, many patients may feel disheartened by the extremely poor survival rates reported. Fortunately, advances in medical therapy have significantly improved survival rates making the NIH Registry data only relevant to untreated IPAH patients. More current survival estimates have come to us from three large medical databases (or registries) of patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH):

1. REVEAL registry

2. French National PAH registry

3. University of Chicago Pulmonary Hypertension Connection registry

REVEAL is the largest PAH registry so far, including more than 3,000 patients. Enrollment of the initial 2,977 patients was completed in 2007 and patients have been followed since then. REVEAL showed that one-year survival from diagnosis for PAH patients overall is now roughly 85 percent with five-year survival of 57 percent (Figure 2). These results were confirmed by the smaller French National registry, which enrolled 354 patients with PAH from 2002 to 2003 and showed similar survival rates, as well as the University of Chicago Pulmonary Hypertension Connection.
