Later that evening, when they were both sleeping peacefully, I lay there in the bed beside Hope, wide awake. I’d managed to run from this feeling—love—all my life.

I guess I should have known it would catch up to me, one way or another.

I studied Hope’s face, almost angelic in the moonlight. The pain in my heart was bittersweet. I never expected to feel for anyone the way I felt for her.

Obviously.

If I thought I was going to fall in love with her, I never would have said yes to this little arrangement. I would have turned tail and run, far and fast, in the opposite direction.

Now, you couldn’t drag me away from her with a tow truck. I didn’t know what a future with her and Jamie might look like. I didn’t care that I might always be playing second fiddle. I would exist simply to fan her and feed her grapes if that’s what she wanted from me. As long as I got to be near her, to hear her laugh and touch her smooth skin. The kids online would probably call me a simp for her. I wasn’t totally sure what that meant, but it sounded right.

They were leaving to visit her brother in Denver the day after tomorrow, and I was already dreading being away from her. It was just a long weekend, but I felt like I was staring down the business end of a prison sentence. I no longer cared whether my feelings for Hope were appropriate, or even smart. Self-preservation had flown out the window. I didn’t care about anything as much as I cared about being with her, in whatever way she would have me. And until she told me to leave, I wasn’t going anywhere.

I rolled onto my side, facing her. The vibration in the mattress brought her to the surface of sleep, but she didn’t break through to waking.

“Keep dreaming, princess,” I whispered. “All is well here.”
