CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Murray had heard the gunshots.

As he was walking carefully through the fifth floor of the desolate building, he heard the echoes of gunfire through the tarp that was straining against the elements. He barked into the radio to cease fire, but once again, he heard nothing from Jensen.

‘Bastard,’ Murray uttered to himself.

Murray had made it clear that Sam Pope was to be taken alive, and now, as he turned on his heel and headed back to the stairwell, he wondered if stepping back and allowing Jensen to take point had been the right call.

Was Sam Pope dead?

Was Jensen?

Just as he placed his foot on the first step to descend through the building, he heard the sickening impact of something colliding with the scaffolding on the other side of the building, followed swiftly by two more gunshots. Any distress calls going through to the police would be intercepted, with Wainwright making it clear to Sarratt that they needed the immunity to carry out their operation.

There was no backup coming.

No sirens wailing through the bitter winter air signifying the arrival of the law.

Guardian was the law. And Murray turned back off the top step, drew his weapon, and carefully headed back through the gutted floor of the building. As he cleared another one of the large, empty rooms, he could hear the heavy breathing beyond the concrete doorway that led to another barren part of the building. The bitter chill whipped through the building, and as he approached the threshold, he could hear the shuffling of someone.

Sam?

Stepping carefully, Murray approached the wall, pressed himself against it, and raised his weapon.

He spun around the edge of the doorway but was instantly knocked off balance. A hand shot out and latched onto his wrist like a snake’s bite, the fingers embedding into the pressure points of his wrist and eliminating his grip. Smoothly, the expert hands dispossessed him, spun the weapon round, and Murray held his hands up as he was looking down the barrel of his own gun.

Behind it, he looked into the eyes of Sam Pope.

‘Hello, Sam,’ Murray said with a grin, seemingly unphased by the predicament.

Sam, breathing heavily, and wincing as he did so, took a few moments, scanning through his memories to put a name to the face he clearly recognised. The greying hair and the beard made it difficult, but the confusion soon melted into recognition.

‘Murray?’ Sam said in disbelief.

‘Been a while, huh?’

‘What the hell are you doing here?’

‘Believe it or not, I’m not thinking about buying the building.’ Murray chuckled, but cut it off when Sam didn’t join in. ‘I’m here for you.’

Sam reaffirmed his grip on the gun.

‘What the hell are you talking about?’

‘It’s been a long time,’ Murray said, blowing out his cheeks. ‘You’ve been pretty busy.’

‘Yeah, well, things seem to keep propping up.’ Sam shrugged, still holding him at gunpoint. ‘How’s Becky?’

‘Good.’ Murray started to reach into his pocket. ‘We’ve got two boys—’

‘I don’t need to see pictures,’ Sam said firmly. Murray held up his hands in acceptance.
