TWENTY-SIX

Once Cole had lowered the garage door and sealed them in, Korso raised the lid of the trunk and looked down at their willing captive.

‘We’re here,’ Korso said.

Wincing at the harsh fluorescents above, Teodor gripped Korso’s hand and climbed out of the tight space. Once he was on solid ground again, he arched his back and stretched his arms out wide as he looked around. ‘Where?’

‘Back at the safe house. We’ve also got you some fresh clothes, right after you’ve treated yourself to a good long shower.’

‘Definitely take that shower,’ Cole said as he walked over to the connecting door and pulled it open.

Korso and Teodor each followed him into the house. As they passed the kitchen area, Korso pointed to a small pile of neatly folded clothes arranged on the kitchen counter, topped off with a brand new pair of black Nikes. ‘For you.’

‘Hey, my favourite.’ Teodor grinned as he checked the soles. ‘My size too. You guys mind readers or what?’

‘We just do our research. Bathroom’s upstairs, along with fresh towels.’

Teodor sniffed under his arms, and made a face. ‘Yeah, okay, I take hint.’ Grabbing his new clothes, he began climbing the stairs to the second floor.

Cole grabbed a beer from the refrigerator, popped the top, and collapsed onto the settee with a dramatic sigh. He turned on the TV and clicked the remote until he found a sports channel. Meanwhile, Korso got himself a bottle of Coke and took a seat at the breakfast bar. He checked his watch: 6.07 p.m.

They’d made pretty good time, considering. Following Korso’s explicit instructions, Cole had taken an extremely indirect route back to the house, constantly doubling back and retracing part of their route to make sure nobody was taking any undue interest in them. Nobody was. But Korso was still surprised that everything had gone as well as it had, especially that final chase through the busy streets of Sofia. Just one small error there could have cost them everything, with all their previous hard work counting for nil. But Lucian had more than earned her fee this afternoon.

Not to take anything away from Samara’s role in the proceedings, of course. She and Lucian had spent hours working on their timing until each completely trusted the other, and that effort had paid dividends today. Since Korso had known that the cops wouldn’t be taking notice of the second BMW’s licence plate in the middle of a high-speed pursuit, he’d instructed her to drive as fast as she could but always within the speed limit. He wondered how long it had taken them to realise they were chasing a completely different car. He knew Samara could handle herself if they gave her any grief once they pulled her over. It also helped that her silver E90 – unlike Lucian’s BMW, which had been purchased under a false name and ID – was totally legit, with all the relevant paperwork ready to present to the cops.
