Chapter Thirteen–Mark

I dozed off again after Theresa left, only rejoining the world because of the incessant noises coming from my phone and laptop. Theresa would have plunged right into drawing up the contract. Leave it to her to be diligent to the very end. I admired her.

Next to me, my phone rang with a vengeance. It was my boss, but he was the last person on the planet that I wanted to talk to. I still had no idea what I was going to say to him. Everything had happened so suddenly and looking back on my actions, I cringed. All the things I’d done to get to that point still haunted me. The suffering I’d put Theresa through.

I’d barely considered the extent of the damages John had bestowed on her other bungalow. Knowing it would have to be gutted to be repaired stabbed at my chest. My own tiny home (or at least, soon to be mine) was the perfect slice of heaven. And I had paid a man to destroy its twin. On the bed, my phone vibrated. I scanned the text.

Mark! I need you to get a hold of me asap. I hear rumors that a deal is in the works, but you haven’t reached out to anyone in financing. This is too big of a job for you to be going rogue. I want you to call me. Now.

I wouldn’t be able to avoid him forever, but I could ignore him until after the sale. Somehow he was getting information. It would shock me if Trish were a mole for him; she was as loyal as they came. No. Someone else had to be keeping an eye on me. Otherwise, Fred never would have known the sale was happening. He had good reason to worry.

Snatching my phone, I rang Trish who answered immediately. “I was starting to wonder when I was going to hear from you. Boy, the fellas upstairs have been blowing up this line for the last two days. What the heck did you do?”

“Nothing for you to worry about.”

Trish groaned. “Why is it when you say that, I get even more worried?”

“Because you’re a smart woman who deserves a much better boss.”

“Oh boy, this must be really bad for you to be laying it on this thick. So, let's hear it. Let's find out what the damage is.”

“It’s nothing for you to worry about”, I repeated. “I promise I have it under control. I do need you to do something for me, though.”

“Does it involve getting us new passports with fake names? Because I told you, I’m never doing that again.”

I chuckled. Years earlier when I’d been new to the game, I crossed a man with ties to the mafia. His threats had been hollow, but at the time, it shook me. Without my supervisor's guidance, I had panicked and told Trish to get us the documents needed to flee the country. After that terrifying ordeal, I started being smart about who I ticked off and who had the clout to follow through with threats.
