Chapter Nineteen
I have no idea why Mekhi is video chatting me shirtless again.
Weâve already talked PROMposal Queen business today and made a trip to the dollar store. Iâm supposed to be using this time to be creative, while he adds onto my draft of the marketing portion of the business plan.
Iâve been doing pretty good. People are still vain, but Mekhiâs notes have helped me be a little more forgiving. Iâm glad I stopped accepting requests, though; the pressure of seeing the numbers go up on that first day was too much. Now that I know where the end is, it all feels doable. Plus, a sold-out-in-one-day business canât be a bad thing to share with Mercer.
âAre you wrapped up like a burrito again?â he blurts out before we even exchange a greeting. âEvery time we talk youâre like that.â
I raise my eyebrows. âIâm swaddling. Or I was, until you made me take my arm out.â
Heâs quiet for a second, eyes focused somewhere other than his phoneâs camera. âDictionary says swaddling mimics the conditions of the womb. Why are you doing that? Are you fussy?â
âSometimes. You wouldnât be making fun of me if you knew how many problems Iâve solved in exactly this position.â I lift my chin, proud. âDo you think these promposal ideas come out of nowhere? Next time you need to do some deep thinking, try it.â
Without a word, he disappears from the screen.
Thereâs a lot of rustling around until eventually the phone falls and I lose my view.
I giggle. âI didnât mean you had to try it right now.â
When his face fills the screen again, heâs up to his neck in blankets. Heâs matched my swaddle with his own. âI got it really tight, my feet are in here good, but how do you get both hands inside without pulling something out of socket?â
I have to work hard not to laugh. I keep my tone even. âIâm not going to lie, itâs a skill.â I prop my phone up between pillows so he can see my full process. âThereâs some very careful wiggling and some contorting, and sometimes I have to start over because it loosens too much. But when I get it right, itâs so good.â
I sigh because Iâve gotten it right and have been a perfect example of how he, too, can achieve this sort of happiness.
âYour turn,â I say.
âIâm good. I donât want to mess it up. Itâs the perfect tightness.â He tilts his head in surprise. âIt is kind of relaxing.â
âEven better if you do it all the way. You have to at least try after you made me take my arm out to talk to you.â
He pants. âBut I like it this way.â
âWhatever. Keep your little off-the-shoulder wannabe swaddle.â
He shakes his head but, again, accepts the challenge. He rocks back and forth and side to side. Nothing like my perfect example. The blanket turns into a big mess around him.
âYouâre going to fall off the bed and hurt yourself. You can stop now.
