Chapter Nine

When Mason wasn’t back by the time Brady had finished packing, he sat on the couch and dialed Vance.

“Well, hey there. You’ve only been there a day. Bored already?”

Brady had to laugh. Only a day and it felt like a lifetime. “Nothing could be further from the truth.”

“Oh?”

He debated telling Vance at least about Jonah, but that would involve getting into everything, and he wanted to talk to Vance and Garth together. “Actually, is Joey handy?”

“Right here,” Joey came on the line almost instantly. “Hi, Brady.”

Brady smiled. He could picture Joey tucked up close to Vance in their living room. Hopefully they weren’t in bed. “How’re you feeling?”

“Better every day.” There was a sound of a kiss. “What’s up?”

“Did you know much about the local pride when you lived here?” Brady wasn’t sure he would have—Joey was a cougar, not a lion—but it didn’t hurt to check.

“Hmm, now I’m curious. Someone catch your eye?” he teased.

“Joey…”

“Okay, fine. You’re no fun. I didn’t have much to do with them as a group, although I did know a couple of them from the bar scene. On the DL, of course.”

“Oh?” He wondered if Mason was one, but Brady doubted he ever went out to gay clubs. That seemed risky for him.

“Not that I’d out them, even to you, but let’s just say both of the pride members I met had the wrong equipment for me and you, but just right for each other.”

“Ah. Gotcha.” Brady filed that away. “How about just your general impression?”

Joey was silent for a few moments. “Ruled by an iron fist, no tolerance for fags, humans or other species, and altogether not a great, shining example of pride life.” Joey’s usually happy voice betrayed his dislike.

He continued to the crux of it. “Do you think someone from this pride had anything to do with your kidnapping?”

There was stunned silence before Joey finally answered, “I don’t know, really. I never saw anyone else besides Peter and his followers.”

“What?” Brady heard Vance exclaim on the other end. There were sounds of a struggle during which Vance obviously claimed back his phone. “What’s this all about, Brade? You think they were working with Peter?”

“Well”—he chose his words carefully—“I do know that at least this alpha knew Peter. He was living in this area under the name Paul and had, at the minimum, casual ties to the pride here. Look”—he cut Vance off when he began to speak—“I’m coming home tomorrow, at least for a visit. I’ve learned a lot here but I want to fill you and Garth in in person.”

“Me too, right?” Joey chimed in from close to the phone.

Vance blew out a frustrated breath. “Fine. Text me when you’ll be arriving and I’ll let your dad know.”

Brady heard the door downstairs open. “Will do. I have to go. See you guys soon.”

“Take care, Brother.”

He stood as Mason bounded up the stairs two by two. “Hey there. How was your talk with Cord?”

Mason’s lion was clearly visible in his snapping eyes as he growled.
