Two portal jumps later, Grober and Cardan found themselves standing outside the Portal Police headquarters. Never in a million years did he think he’d be back. But here he was, pulled back by a magnet that he couldn’t escape from.

“Hey Grober! I never thought I’d see you back,” the player at the main gate acknowledged him and smiled. “I was going to salute you there for a second.”

“Yeah I know, habits die hard. Major Tonza in?” Grober asked.

“I’ll find out,” the player said and disappeared.

“You OK?” Grober asked. “You’re strangely quiet, Cardan.”

“Still can’t believe I’m here. And I’m going inside.”

“Grober, he’s in, said to come straight up. I take it I don’t have to show you the way,” the player said and grinned.

“I could walk there in my sleep, Calgor.”

“What about the kid, he with you?” Calgor asked, looking at Cardan.

“Yeah, I can vouch for him. I don’t think he’ll cause you any trouble, Calgor. But I can’t guarantee he won’t explode with excitement,” Grober said and grinned.

“Those were the days, Grober, those were the days,” Calgor replied, smiling at Cardan’s embarrassment and waving them on. “Go on through.”

Standing back, Grober and Cardan waited until the main gate was pulled back before walking in. Once inside, he heard an audible moan come from Cardan. Grober smiled. It wasn’t surprising standing in front of the vast building and grounds that surrounded it. It looked just as he’d left it. To his left, Grober could see the next batch of recruits being drilled on the firing range. He wondered if his old drill sergeant was working them. He pitied them. But anyone that made it through the training would be an expert with a bow. That was guaranteed. Hearing a flutter above him, Grober looked up to the see the flag fly at full mast once more. The last time he’d been here it had been flying at half mast, as a mark of respect for all the players that had fallen to Gifu’s trap.

“Stay close and don’t get lost,” Grober said, looking back to make sure the player was keeping up. “You’ll have time later to see everything.”

“You promise?”

“Promise. But I need to see Tonza straight away,” Grober said, picking up the pace. “The quicker we get news of that attack on the village to him, the quicker we get to the bottom of this.” Following the old familiar path to Tonza’s office on the first floor, Grober led Cardan passed the portal rooms and on passed the armory. He’d lost count of how many times he’d walked this way. It usually wasn’t a pleasant experience. In his earlier days a visit to Tonza’s office was usually to get a dressing down for something he’d done wrong. Looking back, it was a miracle they’d let him stay for so long.

“Grober, you back?”

Grober stopped walking and turned to see a familiar face coming up the corridor behind him.

“You’re not the first to say that,” Grober said and smiled. “How are you, Jansun?”

“Good and you.
