Personal and Other Issues

Some of the precipitators identified by both the literature survey and the primary research relate to issues which might be described as being of a personal nature:

• alcohol abuse

• financial difficulties

• murder/attempted murder/assisted suicide followed by the suicide of ‘the offender’

• partner relationships.

The nature of these precipitators common to both sources is now examined.

ALCOHOL ABUSE

Alcohol abuse was identified within the literature survey as a major suicide precipitator in both the general community and the police community (Chapter 6). It is discussed, for example, in the research of Dalton and Noble (2006), Dryden-Edwards and Stoppler,9 Kirschman (1997) and Violanti (2007).

Eight officers within the primary research experienced alcohol-abuse problems. Furthermore, as previously referenced in Chapter 4 (section entitled ‘Alcohol Abuse’), the officers within the primary research who abused alcohol were also suffering with long-term depression.

As previously noted, with reference specifically to PTSD, Violanti suggests that alcohol may be a substitute for the effects of endorphin withdrawal that may occur following a traumatic incident. Three officers in the primary research were suffering from the effects of PTSD, but according to explanations offered concerning their suicides, only one officer was suffering from alcohol-abuse problems.
