There are eighteen different types of seals. They can be found in every ocean and even in some lakes. Seals give birth on land. Otherwise, they spend all their lives in the water.

Seals are great divers. Although they are clumsy on land, they are sleek and fast in the water. Seals can stay underwater for thirty minutes! Their heartbeat slows down underwater. This allows them to use less oxygen and stay underwater for a longer time.

When seals need to breathe, they come to the surface. They either chew holes in the ice or hit it with their heads to make an air hole. Then they take big gulps of fresh air.

Seals eat fish, birds, shellfish, and tiny shrimp-like creatures called “krill.”
