FERGIE

“Vic!” I cry out.

I throw my arms out toward him, but I’m not quite sure where he is in space, so I end up kind of half-falling into him.

“I heard the bombs,” he whispers. “You’re okay. I’m so happy that you’re okay.”

“I’m fine, thanks to Torsten. He led me and Isabella and Shera out safely. But I can’t say the same for Livvie. She’s gone, and Grace, too.”

“Shit.” Vic sounds stricken. “Is Torsten okay?”

“He’s here and he’s upright, and that’s all we have time to care about now. We’ve already had an explosive evening, so let’s not waste any time. How are you fine?” Cas demands. “And you’re outside the house. How the fuck did you convince your mother to let you miss Thursday night dinner?”

“I was home,” Vic explains. “I’d just sat down at the table when Juliet called. She said she had something to tell me, some information from Sommesnay. She begged me to meet her in the Elysium parking lot. I waited there for twenty minutes, but she didn’t show. Then I heard the explosions, and I came back here to check on the house and found it like this – the lights out and the gates locked.”

“We need to get inside the house,” Cas growls. “I bet my favorite sword that those bombs were a distraction, a way to play this off as a crusade against the Imperators, when really it’s about Sommesnay’s personal revenge. You said there was a way inside?”

“Juliet and I found one when we were kids. There’s a trapdoor in the woods, camouflaged beneath the roots of a gnarled old oak. It leads through the walls to a hidden panel at the back of her closet.”

“Why have you never told us about this before?” Cas demands.

“It’s a twin thing. It was our secret.” Vic sounds uncomfortable. “We used to sneak into the forest at night because Juliet liked to make pretend fairy circles with her toys. I had to play Oberon. We haven’t used it for a long time.”

Vic slides my hand into his elbow and leads me into the narrow wooded area that surrounds his house.

“Now, until the break of day, through this house each fairy stray.” I tease Vic by quoting Oberon’s lines from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. “To the best bride-bed will we. Which by us shall blessed be.”

“I’ll get you for this later,” he whispers back. “But we should be quiet. If this is how Zack got inside, then he might have someone guarding the entrance.”

“Trip away, make no stay. Meet me all by break of day…”

“You’re a menace, Duchess.” Vic helps me over a gnarly root. “Stop. It’s here. The ground is disturbed.”

He leaves my side to scrabble around in the dirt. Torsten comes up beside me, his fingers finding mine and giving them a squeeze. I don’t know if I’m really okay, but I squeeze back because I need to be strong for him.

I know that many people might see Torsten standing here, not saying anything,
