It’s dark when the fireworks start. I’ve blocked out the other dozen or so people in Jack and Claire’s backyard. I think some of their neighbors joined us? Who knows. All I’ve been able to concentrate on is how I can position myself close to Lindy when the fireworks start without her thinking I’m a crazy stalking weirdo. I hand her a glass bottle –it’s some sort of fruity alcoholic libation—like a peace offering as I stake out a spot next to her on the stone wall of the terrace.

I can be just friends with her, right?

I keep thinking about that speech I gave her yesterday. The one where I said I recently got divorced, and I can’t be embarking on any new relationships. So, she bought that, right?

I bought that, right?

I’m sitting so close to her that I can smell the soft floral scent of her hair wafting into my nose. It’s intoxicating. At least I think it’s her hair and not the fact I’ve had three of these fruity things I’ve been drinking.

“I haven’t been to see fireworks in years,” she admits, finally making eye contact with me. The brightness of her skin when the moonlight bounces off it illuminates her face like a pearl.

“Why’s that?” Suzanne and I used to see them over the river in Wilmington—or we’d go to Philly. Sometimes New York. It was one of her favorite holidays, and we almost always ended it with a bang. Literally and metaphorically. Maybe that’s why I keep wanting to move closer to Lindy? My body is conditioned to think it’s getting some action momentarily. I can only imagine what Shark would say about that if he were here.

“Oh, you know. It’s just me and my parents, and they go to bed at like eight every night. So no fireworks for them.”

“I see. So you live with your parents?” I confirm.

An embarrassed laugh spills out of her mouth. “Geez, make me sound like a loser, why don’t you?” She boldly slaps my knee, and it doesn’t hurt, but wow does the sensation travel to places I don’t expect it to go. Though, if what I said earlier about being programmed has any truth to it…

“Oh, I’m sorry, I don’t mean to imply—“

She shakes her head. “No, no, it’s fine. My parents are older, and I’m there to take care of them. They’re just really forgetful, that’s all. My brother lives in Baltimore and doesn’t get down this way much, so I try to help them out since I’m here and…you know, single.”

She puts some emphasis on the word “single,” but as soon as she shares it, her body seems to freeze with panic. I want to lay my hand on her knee and soothe her. She slapped my knee a moment ago. Doesn’t that mean I can touch hers? And solve the mystery about the softness of the fabric of her dress?

I go for it. Obviously the alcohol has turned off the mathematical probability calculator embedded in
