Chapter Nineteen

Kaine waited for Dalmon to answer his bloody phone. He often griped at his brother for calling at ungodly hours, but he trusted his brother to pick up the same way he would. Because calls at two in the morning were never good. Dalmon answered with a grumble.

“I’m glad returning to work has been so good for your spirits,” Kaine said as a greeting.

“Work is fine, but clearly something is wrong at your end.” there was the rustling of sheets and a soft murmur, so he waited for his brother to get out of bed and leave his unofficial—because they hadn’t announced it yet—fiancé sleeping. A door closed and Dalmon, spoke a bit louder. “Right, what’s going on?”

Since there was no easy way to put it, and Kaine didn’t like dancing around problems, he launched straight in. “There’s some shit happening at the lodge where Gerrit is currently staying. It’s a collection of oddness that makes me think the Shadow Board might be involved.” He gave Dalmon the rundown on the snow leopard and the magic-laced storm and then waited for his brother’s response.

Dalmon was silent for a bloody long time.

“Well? Is it beyond the Board’s capability? Has Everest heard anything?”

“No and no. So do you think the storm is hunting the leopard? If so, it would be more likely to be organized crime related than Board related.”

“Given the way they’re involved with shifter trafficking, I would say they are organized crime,” Kaine replied dryly.

“They definitely have those connections. Creating a storm seems like overkill unless the target is Gerrit and the snow leopard is something else.”

“You don’t believe in coincidences any more than I do.”

“That is also true,” Dalmon said without offering any further insight.

“We don’t have the capabilities to stop the storm. Are you able to locate the source?”

“Possibly, but I don’t know if I have the capabilities to then take out those responsible. I don’t want to jeopardize the bigger mission.”

Kaine swore. “If he dies, I swear to the Fates, you are raising him.”

“Agreed,” Dalmon said far too readily.

“You’re not supposed to agree; you’re supposed to find a solution. You’re the head of the fucking Coven. You have resources I would love to get my hands on.”

“It’s not just about the resources. We won’t get another chance to stop the Board. For all we know, this is a ploy to draw us out and reveal how much we know. What I do know is that a witch, or witches, can’t maintain that kind of magic indefinitely, even if they’re draining shifters.”

Kaine paced, his fingers flexing and gold flames flickering over his skin. “So you’re going to sit there while shifters die? While our brother is alone and facing death by blizzard?”

“It’ll be bloody hard to find his egg in the snow," Dalmon mused. "And it would erase all evidence of a crime.”

Kaine paused, hand clenched and burning. He’d been so busy thinking about the security aspects and Gerrit’s possible death that he hadn’t thought about the criminal side of things.
