“It was to laugh!” cried Lauck, as Gun Crew 26 ate their dinner. “There’s hisself, standin’ before all of th’ wardroom, readin’ from a scrap o’ paper: ‘I am heartily sorry for any disfavor I may have brought to this distinguished table.’ Ha-ha! I tells you, Radle, I ’ad ta bite me own tongue not ta chortle in his face!”

“So did th’ captain’s guest accept his apologies, then?” Radle and his messmates were enjoying their grog after supper and were joined by a few others.

“Aye, ’e did, good man that ’e is. Too good fur the likes o’ Tarleton!”

“I say ‘aye’ to that, mate,” agreed Stokes. Those assembled grunted with approval.

“Still, for what Tarleton said afore Miz Wentworth—I canna like th’ colonel,” continued Lauck.

Eades spoke up. “I wish I were a gentleman. I’d set that bugger ta rights!”

“Ye a gentleman, Eades? Ho-ho! That would beat all!”

“More gentleman than ye, Lauck!”

“Belay that there talk, mates,” advised Radle in a good-natured way.

“Tarleton’s a two-faced scrub,” declared the bosun, “an’ not a man on th’ barky will say different. Miz Wentworth is a fine, Christian lady. She reads ta th’ lads in th’ sick bay every day.”

“Aye, she does,” agreed Radle.

“Maybe it’s not so bad havin’ a lady aboard ship, eh, Radle?” said Lauck.

“We’ll see,” Radle allowed.

All assembled laughed at that. Except Pyke. He simply glowered.
