Chapter Eight
A SHARP RINGTONE shook Megan out of a lovely warm sleep. Beside her, Syler bolted upright and grabbed her phone. She answered with a terse word. Her face hardened as she listened to the voice on the other end. After a minute or so, she barked a brief affirmative and ended the call.
âWhat is it?â Megan asked. She sat up as Syler leapt to her feet and started rummaging for her clothes.
âIâm so sorry Meg,â Syler came over and knelt on the comforter. She held her shirt in one hand and reached out to cup Meganâs cheek with the other. âThereâs an emergency and I have to go back. Itâs Nikky. She was just brought in by ambulance with numerous contusions, a possible ruptured kidney and suspected splenic lac. You can stay here and come back on the train tomorrow. Weâve got the room until tenââ
Megan threw back the comforter. âIâm going with you.â She twisted her hands together. âThis is my fault. If I had tried harder to protect Nikky this wouldnât have happened.â
âYou donât know what happened,â Syler said. She reached out and gave Meganâs hand a squeeze. âNo what ifs, all right?â
Even though she had a horrible, black feeling in her belly, Megan nodded. Syler turned away and yanked her sports bra over her head. Megan was right behind her. Years of practice being on-call gave them a firefighter-like efficiency as they dressed.
âWhy donât you get the car,â Megan said as she stuffed the last item into her overnight bag. âIâll check us out.â
âGood plan,â Syler said. âIâll give you the extra for my share of the drinks once weâre on the road.â
âNo way, I lost the ping-pong fair and square, and I want to get moving as soon as possible,â Megan said. She was the first out the door, already with the envelope that contained their combined funds for the room in her hand. Even at that late hour, a young employee met Megan at the front desk. After she passed over the fee and the room key, the worker dropped his fist into his palm as if heâd just remembered something.
âMaier-sama, there was a package left for you this evening.â
âWhat?â Megan had to think for a moment before she remembered. âOh yes, thanks.â She took the slim pack, which bore the logo of the one convenience store in the area, and shoved it into her pocket. She darted out to the street where Sylerâs Jimny idled at the curb. Megan knocked on the driverâs side window.
âScoot over,â she said. âIâll drive and you can rest.â
âAll right, thanks,â Syler said.
The drive back was quiet. In the passenger seat, Syler crossed her arms and tucked her chin against her chest, dozing as Megan navigated the deserted highway. She pushed the speed limit with a careful eye in the rear view mirror.
When they reached the hospital, Megan let Syler out at the after-hours entrance then found a parking spot in the lot behind the hospital.
She cut the engine but didnât move to get out.
