Exorcism
Pentecostals, from the beginning, believed in exorcism. Exotic stories told by missionaries returning from faraway places might include reference to exorcism but, until the charismatic movement in the 1960s began, it was unusual to hear any reference to exorcism taking place within the industrialized world. Once charismatic preachers began to challenge the settled opinions of early Pentecostals, dispute arose about the need for exorcism in the West. The debate became particularly acute when a small number of influential charismatic preachers argued that the exorcism ought, in some circumstances, to be performed on existing Christians. The debate polarized between those who argued that Christians who had accepted Christ and even known their own baptism in the Holy Spirit were, by this fact, clear of any demonic interference and, on the other side, those who argued that all kinds of addictions and habits might have demonic origins and, worse, that curses or occult behaviour practised by family members might be passed down through the generations to today. While the great majority of Pentecostals stood firm in their belief in the completeness of their salvation, a minority of specialist ministers propagated their own views about the prevalence of demonic activity and the danger posed to unthinking Western society of ignoring the threat of dark spiritual forces.
