Chapter Eighteen

It hadn’t been an easy thing for Macie to do, but in the end, she’d decided her parents were right and she’d handwritten a letter to her donor’s family, folded the piece of paper in half, slipped it into an envelope, and taken it herself to the donor centre. There, it would be passed on to the donor’s family—if they wanted to hear from her. There was a good possibility that they wanted to stay anonymous as well, and Macie would never hear back. She wasn’t sure how she felt about that. On one hand, she would be relieved not to feel as though she was going to let them down, that she wouldn’t have to go through the experience of them wishing something as important as their loved one’s heart had gone to someone else. But on the other hand, it would be like a rejection of sorts, and she’d have to move forward with the knowledge that they didn’t want to know her.

Her phone buzzed with a notification, and she picked it up and swiped the screen. It was a message via Instagram.

Hi, Macie. Sorry to message you out of the blue. I’m a researcher for Tova’s Questions, and I came across your social media account. I’m looking into receivers of organs for the family of a man who died and donated his organs, and your timeline and location fits the profile. We would need to confirm the match via the donor centre, but if you’re willing to do that, and it’s a match, the family of your donor would really love to meet you. We’d love to talk about doing the reunion on our show. However, if this isn’t something you’re interested in and would prefer to keep your anonymity, then we completely respect that. Hope to hear from you. Diana.

Macie sucked in a breath and read the message over again. Her donor’s family wanted to meet her? And on a television programme? Did that mean they’d also contacted the donor centre and she’d hear from them soon?

She knew exactly what show the researcher was referring to—she’d seen the last episode, of course she had. It had been so close to home, and she had to admit that it had been touching. So much of it had resonated with her, and she’d watched with tears in her eyes. A part of her had even been tempted to reach out to Logan Foss and tell him that she suspected she was also one of the people who’d received the gift of a new chance at life from the same donor, but she never had.

She continued to stare at the message. What should she do? Was that something she wanted to get involved with? She remembered all the posts she’d made where she’d felt as though she’d revealed too much about herself and how she’d deleted them. If she took part in this show, she wouldn’t be able to delete what she didn’t like. It would be out there forever.
