CHAPTER 6

“HIS WIFE!” A PENCIL thin, reed-faced woman shot out of a chair opposite Haydn. “You ... you’re not ... not ...”

“Oh, but I am,” he said. “Let me introduce you. Jacquelyn Blythe, this is Marcy Fabrinni, my wife. We were married over the weekend.”

“Over the weekend? But that’s ... that’s impossible. I heard nothing of it. You’ve been seeing no one, and ...”

“Spur of the moment thing,” he said. Taking Marcy’s hand, he seated her in his lap. Marcy milked it, throwing her arms around his neck. “We married in Vegas.”

“Vegas?” Jackie’s voice became a squeak.

“Yeah, it was great. We had the ceremony in this little chapel on the strip. She looked fabulous. Man, I wanted to eat her up in that dress. Couldn’t wait to get to a room and ...”

“That’s enough.” Jackie’s voice grew hard. “I see what you’re doing, putting on this performance. I don’t believe you. Honestly, Haydn Fabrinni, this isn’t funny, after all we’ve meant to each other.”

Marcy stuck out her hand, her wedding ring flashing in the light. “It’s not a performance,” she said.

Haydn’s breath on her neck quickened. She’d thought about this, planned what to say, despite the fact he’d told her to say nothing at all. But after what had gone between them, she couldn’t do that. He deserved more.

Jackie’s gaze could have cut glass, but Marcy ignored it.

“He’s a good man,” she continued, “and I’m the luckiest girl in the world. Never thought I’d find someone who’d take me as I am.”

The restaurant had grown deathly quiet, the customers listening in.

“You wouldn’t understand that. You’ve grown up with a place in the world, but see, I haven’t. And he’s the best.” She looked at him then.

His eyes were on her alone, the corners drawn tight.

“I’m lucky to be his wife.”

His hand rose to her face, his thumb caressing her cheek. “I’m the lucky one,” he replied. “If that ball had gone in the pocket, where would you be?”

She gave a soft sigh. “Where I shouldn’t.”

“All this is touching, but I ...” Jackie began.

But whatever she said after that, Marcy didn’t hear because her mouth on his, the whole world fell away. “Home,” she whispered in his ear. “I want to go home.”

He stood to his feet, her in his arms. “Exactly what I was thinking.”
