HIKER TIP: This fun section was very hot and it would be good to wear a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and bring along an extra bottle of water. Also, check for ticks.

At this point in the trip, I knew there was only a couple weeks’ worth of money left, if that, and I lay awake every night, thinking about what to do. My camera was also acting funny. Sometimes the lens wouldn’t open, causing me to miss some important shots. I wasn’t even sure I wanted to keep going without being able to document it.

Picturesque as a postcard, hikers are welcomed to Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania, by a stately, gentle tree at the foot of “Children’s Lake.” Here, I shared the last of my cereal with fish, baby ducks and a graceful white swan. Seven acres in size, this manmade lake is fed by 30 natural springs, producing 22 million gallons of water a day. That’s a lot of H20! Following white blazes along ‘Lovers Walk,’ you’ll see a 1700’s Georgian mansion, positioned on a terraced hill overlooking the water. It’s been empty for years.
