Chapter Five—Search Engine Optimization
The big mystery or facet of web design many people within or going into the website designing field are interested in is Search Engine Optimization, or SEO. SEO is the practice of manipulating your website’s content and appearance to match the keywords and or search queries internet users type into search engines so that your website is among the first few websites listed in the results.
It is an extremely complex and even uncertain practice, but there are several things you can do in order to effectively optimize your website to appear in a user’s search results. The complexity stems mainly from the algorithms search engines, such as Google, use to pull websites into the search results of a user and to display certain sites ahead of others on the list.[10] The exact algorithms are unknown and they are ever-changing, making it difficult for even some of the most experienced and well-seasoned website professionals to predict the courses of action needed to get a website to display first.
Essentially, your goal should be to be one of the first four websites listed in the search results. This is because more often than not, a user is only going to trust the first few listings due to the fact that they tend to assume that the higher a site is on search results, the more reputable the company is.[11] It may seem daunting or even out of reach to effectively optimize your site. But there are three simple things you can do to aid in getting your site to the top of the list; it’s called the SEO Trifecta. The SEO Trifecta consists of working on your website’s URL, meta description, and H1 tags. Earlier, I described the importance of choosing a domain for your site that will be beneficial for SEO purposes. As a reminder, pick a domain containing the keywords that you want your site to appear for when they are searched. My example was that if you want your site to appear for a person searching for pet grooming or care in the city of Boston, your domain should be something like www.petgroomingboston.com or www.petgroomingseerviceboston.com.
Next in the Trifecta is your site’s H1 tags. H1 tags are the technical designation of a webpage’s title and headings. Search engines read these tags as the title of the page. They can be better referred to simply as your webpage’s title. Most website building platforms will automatically create the H1 tag when you input the title of a page you are creating or editing. For this reason, there is no need to worry about the mechanics behind ensuring that a page title has an H1 tag as it is behind the scenes and the platform will do it for you automatically.
The only concern you as the creator should have is choosing the title of your pages! Ensure the page’s title contains the keywords you want users to find your site or page by when they are searching. Taking the pet grooming
