It’s going on eleven. I don’t fully expect a response. She’s either passed out in an uncomfortable chair, watching a movie, or reading a book. Unlike most other girls in their twenties, she’s barely ever on her phone. Half the time she doesn’t notice my text messages until hours later.

LENI: I am, but shouldn’t you be sleeping by now? Normally after a long shift you’ve fallen asleep by ten.

ME: Haha, it’s too quiet in here.

LENI: You know there’s this thing that was invented a little while back called a television. Word on the street is it makes noise.

ME: Yeah, but I prefer the cute snores I’ve gotten used to hearing.
