Chapter Twelve
A few hours later, still with no sign of pursuit, Kreeka came up on the viewing screen. It was a brown ball with veins of blue running over the surface. Red clouds swirled above the surface here and there. One sun, a golden one like my own, but much larger, was some distance away.
I hoped the distance was sufficient to create an ambient temperature. Too close and it would be like the mining worlds where the sun burned everything on the surface. Too far away and it would be too cold for life to thrive. And that didn’t take into consideration the issue of temperature and gravity. There were so many requirements to sustain life.
Over the hours of our journey I’d calmed down. I didn’t know why we couldn’t just go on to Varga, if we weren’t being followed but, as I wasn’t being given a vote, I kept my peace.
“This is Confederate Space,” the leader told me as I sipped on a sachet of tasteless fluid and tried to ignore my grumbling belly.
I’d refused, out of some childish sense of spite, the food packets offered. My thinking was that I might not be able to say no to being dumped on a strange planet with four Danans, after being forced to abandon one of my pod, but I could damn well say no to food. It was petty and ridiculous, but it was how I felt. No internal or external argument would change my mind.
“It is sparsely settled agricultural planet, similar to our own,” the leader explained to us. “But the communities are averse to interplanetary contact. Though you will not be attacked by the locals, you won’t be welcomed either. You will have to make your own way until a rescue mission is mounted. We have already sent a coded message to our commander, making him aware of the circumstances. Help will soon be on its way. Had we known the extent of your danger we would have come better prepared.”
He walked over to me, dropped to his haunches to look into my scowling face. “Human… Lauren… I understand your confusion and helplessness. Our ways are unlike any in the galaxy. Please understand that what we do now is not a choice. A podmate’s survival is paramount. Our biology requires it of us. You will come to accept it in time, just as you came to accept having three males as your podmates, instead of the one you might have had on Gaia. If we are driven by this… urge, then so are you.”
He stood up again. “I hope to see you again soon. Be well, beautiful Lauren. Stay strong and be well. Your mates’ lives depend on you.”
Still scowling, I nodded. My behavior was childish, I knew it. But I was grieving the loss of Frai and had no time for thoughts of podmates. This was all so incredibly alien to me, as everything that had happened to me in the last two years had been. And my two weeks of peaceful, loving bliss seemed a hundred years ago now.
