“Well, it seems he was, to use your words,” Oliver tapped the cell bars, “that fucking stupid.” He tilted his head for effect.

In spite of the situation, Atticus chuckled. “You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”

“Which bit would that be? The part where my star recruit was arrested for drunk and disorderly? Or the part where I was telephoned in the middle of the night to report the fact that said drunkard was in custody? I’m having a whale of a time.”

“I wasn’t arrested, I was detained.”

Oliver eyed the burly police officer as he unlocked the cell door. “Big difference.”

The officer glared at Atticus and hefted a thumb. “Out you get. You’re lucky you got friends in high places, mate.” He was clearly displeased. “Your type usually spends days in ’ere to learn you a lesson.”

Oliver bristled. “Your type?”

He scowled. “You heard. Off you pop before I chuck the both of you in.”

Exhausted, Atticus just wanted to sleep. He grabbed Oliver by the arm. “Let’s go. It’s not worth it.”

The two strode through the dingy Bow Street Police Station in silence. Atticus was more than happy to see the back of the piss-yellow tiles of the claustrophobic holding cell.

They passed through the huge heavy oak entrance and out into the silent, cold morning. The street was empty bar a couple of stray dogs scurrying about in the half light of the pre-dawn.

“Friends in high places?”

Looking at his wallet, Oliver shook his head in mock-seriousness. “I may have accidentally brought some identification that indicated I was from the Foreign Office. Not sure how I could have accidentally made such an error. Quite irresponsible of me, what?”

“Totally irresponsible.” Atticus gave a tired chuckle. “Thank you.”

“My pleasure.” Oliver stretched his back and flattened his messy bed hair. “I suppose being locked up just because you’re black stops happening in the future too?”

Atticus sighed, every cell of his body exhausted. “It really doesn’t.”
