Throughout my next class, I keep imagining how Nathan Ashur will respond to their call. Hard to imagine, though, since I don’t know anything about him but his name. Will he be dismissive? Will he be confused? Doesn’t really matter as long as he doesn’t ask too many questions. Don’t ask questions, Nathan.

When passing time comes, I rush to the hall, dialing the rescue. It rings, once. Twice. Three times. The fourth time, Jeanie answers, and gets Troy.

“She didn’t tell me, or I would’ve called you. We don’t have the biopsy results yet,” Troy says. “I can text you when—oh, here’s your number—”

“No. Don’t use that number.” I rattle off my cell number for him.

“All right.” He laughs.

“Will you give me yours?”

He texts: I’ll text when I know something, and then says it out loud too. “I’ll text when I know something.”

Maybe I don’t want to know. Maybe it’s best if I think she’s okay.

“Nate? Hang in there. It could be nothing.”
