An hour later, Nikki was sitting by the window in the safe apartment. She placed a magnifying glass over the microdot. The contents leapt into view. Her lips curved into a satisfied smile. Tatiana had come through. The twenty pages contained details of the missile sites situated in the Crimea, including their capacity and range. She had also provided a page on the deployment of Soviet soldiers in Bulgaria. Nikki blew out a long breath. Over 3,000 Soviet troops were permanently based ten kilometres outside of Varna, Bulgaria’s largest port on the Black Sea.

Nikki waited for the sound of water running in the shower. Then she lifted the receiver and dialled a number. It rang twice before a familiar voice came down the line. “Yes.”

After confirming the quality of the intel, Nikki made an additional request and replaced the receiver as Jasmine entered the room.

“Is it a go for tomorrow?” her erstwhile lover said.
