THE RECEPTION WAS something I tolerated because it was Vivienne’s only chance for the experience. Two hours in, I’d had enough small talk and waiting. I was hungry, starved for solitude and her naked flesh. My own vibrated with need as I swept her into my arms.

“It’s time,” I announced to all who remained.

“I’m perfectly capable of walking.” She said one thing but snuggled into the crook of my neck as I made my way to the water’s edge.

“Just as well I carry you, uccello. Sand and heels will slow us down.”

Perking up, she twisted enough to see the thirty-foot cruiser pulling in as were a crew of my handpicked men who would maintain our security.

“Where are we going?”

“A surprise for your wedding night. I thought you’d rather be anywhere but on Cabello property.”

The only response I received was her nose to my throat and the brush of lips against my pulse. Thanks enough for the effort it took to secure this outing with little time to plan. As soon as we boarded, I removed my jacket to cover her shoulders from the wind about to abrade her skin. We rode on the bow, my hands braced on the rail with her back to my front.

Vivienne was unnerving, the effects intense. As we cut through each swell, her body found mine until the last twenty minutes where we stayed flush. Heat seared my veins. I needed her. Raw, undefined need. I trembled with it, and if Vivienne sensed the change, she didn’t say a word, only leaned her head onto my shoulder, as if she understood.

“Hancock Island.” I pointed to the pin prick of lights on the horizon, which grew into starbursts as we approached. “Doc Strauss and I talked, in fact we had four days’ worth of time to fill. I called this morning to ask about the cottage he mentioned.”

She glanced at my chin, studying the day-old beard, and then to my lips. “And to collect a favor?”

“Something like that, yes.”

“How many people are in debt to you, husband?”

“Enough. Look.” I pointed to Doc’s summer place as we slowed. Quaint and blue with black shutters lining each of the four windows that bracketed the canopied entrance. I had no idea what we’d find inside, but it didn’t matter because of Vivienne’s bright smile. Her excitement was catchy, and I held in a grin as I assisted her to the dock. Keeping her hand in mine, we walked to the door where I carried her across the threshold—a small tradition I could provide when she missed so many others on her wedding day.

After I set her down, she slipped from my jacket and twirled to find one long room and whitewashed knotty pine everywhere. Francesca’s staff had come minutes before our arrival. A fire burned in the hearth; candles flickered; blinds were shuttered; and fresh sheets were folded to the foot of the bed as if we’d sleep there. I had other plans.

“It’s perfect,” she whispered, when, in reality, it was Vivienne who was perfection.
