“Good point.” Henry eyed the gooey noodles, then took a mouthful.

“So?” said Finley, watching him chew.

Henry’s eyes bulged. His cheeks got red. “Water!” he whispered, fanning his face.

Finley handed him a glassful, which he chugged in two seconds flat.

“It’s KA-POWerful, all right,” he squeaked. “That’s not fusion food — it’s con-fusion food.” Henry took off his hat and shoved it into his backpack.

“What are you doing?” Finley asked.

“I’m Fin-ished,” Henry croaked.

“You can’t give up.” Finley pouted. “We’re just getting started!”

“Easy for you to say,” said Henry. “You’re not the one whose taste buds got burned off.”

“Fine,” said Finley. “Be a quitter. But we’ll never win if we don’t even try.”

Henry’s face got three shades redder. “We’ve been trying for days, and everything we’ve come up with has been nasty. You never listen to me. Everything always has to be your way. I’m sick of being the guinea pig in your cooking experiments. You’re on your own!”

With that, Henry slung his backpack over his shoulder and walked out.

Finley’s stomach sank. She went to the window and watched Henry pedal away. She and Henry didn’t fight. When they saw things differently, they always agreed to disagree. But she’d never seen him this mad.

Maybe he’ll come around, she told herself. Maybe I can still win the contest and give him the free pizza for his birthday. Then he’ll be happy.

Finley inspected the pasta, dangling a limp piece of spaghetti from her fork. Plenty of people liked spicy. And Henry was kind of a wimp when it came to food. Besides, they’d used all the noodles. It was going to have to do.

Finley gave the dish a final stir and shoved some paper drink umbrellas into it for decoration.

“There,” she said. “PB&J Pasta. I just hope we made enough.”
