Chapter 8

I only drove a few more minutes before two Barrow Bay police cars burst out of the darkness in front of me. Both passed, Zach’s car slowing down as his eyes met mine, before he spun around to follow me while the other kept going.

I was safe. My whole body sagged more than I would ever admit to anyone. I might not be everyone’s favorite, but the guys would never let someone hurt me. Who’d bring them doughnuts every Thursday? They needed me.

No, no one was going to mess with the Barrow Bay Police Department. Like everyone else in Barrow Bay, they were weirdly over-talented. And extremely competent with a gun. Personally, I blamed Dorothy for making a private shooting range on resort grounds. She then lured them with free food and drinks when they were there.

Or it might be John’s fear of bears. Our detective, a native LA boy, seemed to have an unreasonable fear of the near-extinct animals. We also might have made it worse by telling a few tall tales of our own.

No, no one was going to try anything now, which brought my mind back to Rob’s warning. The timing was awfully suspicious. Why did he think that me being involved with the case would be dangerous? It was a little too convenient that he warned me and only an hour later, I had an issue. But why would a murder case that was a month old be dangerous? And why wouldn’t they attack Aiden, who’d been investigating it for a while? What did I possibly add that he didn’t?

It only took another ten minutes to get to the Barrow Bay police station. In that time, I had gone back and forth on my attack several times. Could it have been an angry driver? No, they would have passed me when I gave them a chance. Was it one of the suspects? We’d played down my role, so I still had the issue of why me and not Aiden. I was supposed to be the love-sick blogger following Aiden around. Only Rob would have…

Darn it. Rob was the person with the most obvious motive. He knew I was in town to investigate and that I was smarter than I appeared. I should’ve been suspicious of him. Only… it was too obvious. It couldn’t be that easy, right? Was his whole conversation earlier to find out what I’d known about the case?

Oh, my goodness. Had he been working me while I thought I was trying to get information out of him?

I didn’t like that idea. I tried to think back, but I’d lost track of Rob once Noah had sat down. He could have left and waited for me. My route would’ve been easy to guess since it was the only road to Barrow Bay, unless I backtracked down to the freeway.

Sooner than I wanted, I was in the parking lot with Benny, Gladys, and Alice, all waiting at the door, ready to pounce on me as soon as I got out of the car.
