Subspecies haematodes distributed in Sri Lanka, southern India, Thailand and Malesia is a stronger, larger plant growing at 300 - 1800 m in semi-shade. Considerable variation in size of foliage, flower, floral segments and number of flowers are present. In Sumatra, flowers are 5.5 cm across, sepals and petals yellowish or greenish brown with red veins, lip yellowish brown with red spots (Comber 2001). On Langkawi Islands (Malaysia), flowers are 3 - 3.5 cm across, pale straw yellow or light brown to green with five red stripes (Seidenfaden and Wood 1992). On the mainland to the east (Perlis), flower is bigger, sepals wider and yellow with 3 - 4 maroon veins on the sepals (Go et al. 2004). In Thailand, flowers are 3 - 4 cm across (Nanakorn and Watthana 2008).

Subspecies acuminatum occurs in New Guinea, possibly also in Sulawesi. Flowers are 5 cm across, pale green to yellow with 5 - 7 dark-red stripes on the sepals and petals (Du Puy and Cribb 2007).
