Chapter 22

Xu was on the radio as they ran, practically screaming at the NPA to get units spread out along the highway and down Hai’an Road to cut the commandos off. The roads presented their only advantage at the moment. They could move much more quickly, even on foot, and that NPA SUV at the end of the bridge immediately started up, even as several of the Taiwanese police piled out of the veg at the edge of the road and jumped in, the driver almost immediately pulling a J-turn, the tires squealing as he threw it in gear and went screaming off toward Hai’an Road.

Two more went by, moving fast, lights flashing and sirens wailing, to stake out the highway in case the commandos attempted a crossing.

Hank wasn’t sure how much good they were going to do without thermals and belt fed machineguns, but they could hopefully at least slow the bad guys down for the real infantrymen to close in.

Xu was still on the radio. “Tell them to spread out along Hai’an Road and set up blocking positions.” Xu might be the liaison officer and a former military man himself, but Hank had been doing this for a long time, and his boys hadn’t screwed up the ambush by getting buck fever. “We’ll get on line and sweep the woods. They just need to keep eyes on the road.” He stopped. “And the river. Get some guns and eyes on that boat.” He did not want those bastards slipping away in the confusion, or worse, heading on up the river while everyone was down by the seashore looking for them.

Lovell’s squad had arrived at a run, barely catching up as 2nd Squad kept going past the walled property just off the bridge and onto Hai’an Road. Hank thought, as his boots pounded the pavement and he sucked in the humid air, that they should have hopped a ride with the NPA, or had the trucks carry them.

Just past the walled compound, they cut between houses, spreading out across the strip of jungle between the road and the river, and with only about five yards between each man—less in places—they began their sweep.

It was a nightmare from the first step. Night vision goggles or no, it was pitch black in places under the trees, even as more fire and explosions lit up the sky above the mountains behind them. Even without the darkness, visibility was immediately cut to a matter of yards or mere feet.

Footing sucked. Vines and branches grabbed heads, limbs, gear, and weapons. They had to find a way to “swim” through the vegetation, or else they’d get hung up.

They also had to move carefully to avoid making so much noise that they couldn’t hear the enemy. He didn’t want to just stumble on the bad guys in the dark. Better to see and hear them first.

It was a slow sweep, and the tension was as thick as the humidity as Hank moved through the vegetation, his rifle up, scanning through his NVGs as much as he could.
