CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Of course, pandemonium broke out after such an opening statement. Not too much later, Henry took Eli, Nolan, and me aside and dismissed us, promising to call when he gathered more information about the reason he’d wanted us to attend in the first place.

“Thanks for the help, Sasha. You were excellent,” Henry complimented in a whirlwind of activity as he ushered us out the door while civil war broke out in our wake. Apparently, he’d needed me around to irk Gamma’s current leaders into acting unprofessionally.

To my consternation, I suspected he hadn’t planned on me doing it quite so well. My cool, collected answer that neatly crossed all the t’s and boxed everything up had surprised them.

When his call came through on the SUV’s speaker system not even a quarter into our long drive home, he confirmed that suspicion with his cheerful announcement of his underhanded plan. “You made it seem effortless when you got them to show their true colors, Sasha. Good job. You’ve got moxie, kid.”

I wasn’t sure about how I felt about my ability to piss off the leaders of a government organization, especially since I’d been in the dark about Henry’s plan and hadn’t done anything intentionally, but I mumbled out a thanks anyway.

Eli straightened beside me and asked, “Who was that guy?”

“Greg Miller,” Henry explained. “He runs Delta, another organization like ours, but they focus a lot more on technology, at least for their teams as a whole.”

“So it’s true about the sister agencies?” Brien confirmed.

“Yes, my brother, God rest his soul, served as the interim leader for a while after they uncovered corruption in their own ranks. At the moment, they take assholes in charge very seriously. I wouldn’t be surprised if HQ gets a special visit from the CIA director herself. Barker and Hamman have gotten power hungry and needed to be checked.”

Huh, Julia No-Name had a last name.

“Wait, your twin brother worked for an agency like ours,” Brien commented, surprised.

“Fuck, I didn’t even know he had a brother,” Rory added. He was our chauffeur since he’d purchased a vehicle big enough for seven—oddly perfect for our group of six.

I banished the stray thought far from my mind.

“Yeah, well, Greg and my brother, Karl, were close. In fact, Karl took him out drinking and slid him too many Jose Cuervos to get him to capitulate and take over as Delta’s new leader. Greg was the one to call me when Karl was killed. I’d kept his contact saved in my phone but never felt the need to reach out until recently. Gamma used to stand for something good, and for that, Sasha, I—we all apologize. What you’ve been exposed to is not something we agree with or will tolerate.”

“So,” Brien started, “did you get any information about how to proceed? Things got pretty chaotic on our way out.”

“Yes, actually. The fire department has been trying to call Sasha. That’s our sole connection to Rossi for the time being. We’ll have her return
